that was buzzing, or crawling for that matter, was a Cowboy player’s pants earlier this summer.
Dallas Cowboys’ Fullback, Lawrence Vickers, was stretching just before the special teams period when he felt a stinging in his pants. Rushing off the field, grabbing his groin, he noticed two big red ants in his pants.
“I was just holding myself, and you don’t just be grabbing on yourself because ants are on you. People are gonna make fun of you. I don’t care as long as they got off me. I don’t care about people knowing about ants in my pants.”
Although Vickers is allergic to ants and breaks out in hives when bitten, he was able to return to practice the same day after taking some Benadryl and washing the bitten area.
Stinging ants can inject venom that can cause irritation, burning, and even blisters on the skin’s surface. People that have ant allergies, like Lawrence Vickers does, can suffer from more dangerous reactions or even death. The allergic reaction comes from chemicals produced by the body’s immune system while fighting the venom, not actually the venom itself. Insect stings are responsible for 40 deaths per year in the United States.
Symptoms of Ant Allergies
- Hives or blisters
- Wheezing/ difficulty breathing
- Chest pain
- Slurred Speech
Treatment for Ant Allergies
Antihistamines, like Benadryl, can alleviate most ant bite allergy symptoms. More severe reactions may necessitate an epinephrine injection. Doctors or allergy specialists can also give allergy sufferers weekly injections to reduce venom sensitivity.
